My sister told her kids that Santa wasn't real until they started telling everyone at school and ruining their Christmas. She decided it would be a good way for kids to enjoy Christmas.
In my family we never believed in Santa. We'd have Santa stuff around at Christmas time, but always knew it was just a holiday tradition. Same with the Easter bunny. Nothing wrong with that. I think my parents did a pretty good job of helping us understand our reason for celebrating the holidays along with being able to appreciate the fun of non-religious celebrations.
