Yesterday my blonde and very-well traveled/history channel addict co-worker walked into work at 6:18 AM and the first thing she says, "I have a special treat today. We're going to listen to some EVPs." She also mentioned something about watching a documentary on Incan mummies.
Me: Oh cool! (Pretending like I know what that means.)
Other co-worker: Uh...what is that?
Well-traveled co-worker: It stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon. It's when there are voices out there, but only electronic devices can pick it up.
Wikipedia has this to say about EVPs:
Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are electronically generated noises that resemble speech, but are not the result of intentional voice recordings or renderings. Common sources of EVP include static, stray radio transmissions, and background noise. Interest in the subject normally surrounds claims that EVP are of paranormal origin,[1] though there are natural explanations such as apophenia (finding significance in insignificant phenomena), auditorypareidolia (interpreting random sounds as voices in their own language), equipment artifacts, or simple hoaxes which are offered to explain them. Recordings of EVP are often created from background sound by increasing the gain (i.e. sensitivity) of the recording equipment.[2]
This guy has this to say:
I watched this video of a girl who has a tape recorder and is asking questions as if she was interview ghosts. "Who are you? What do you want?" stuff like that. The video has her interviewing the empty room, then she plays back the tape and hears nothing and obviously feels like a loser for having had failed. She then turns up the volume and plays it again and sure enough, you can hear a low rumble that wasn't there before. She freaks out and runs out of the room so the last few seconds of recording are the jumbled shots from holding a camera while running away.
I wish I could find that movie again.
Rather than post EVP movies, I'll let you google your own. If you're looking for some added excitement, search for some in your home state.
This really isn't so much about EVPs as it is about ghosts.
This is quality.

If you're not trick-or-treating this Halloween, try interviewing a ghost, hanging out at abandoned buildings or graveyards, and decide if you believe in ghosts.
